It would be no difficult matter to imagine some of theselonely and towering ranges, ghoul-haunted, and as full ofsupernatural wonders as the ancient historians of the landportrayed them in the days when unicorns, amazons, anddwarfs were the supposed occupants of the very regionthrough which commodious saloon carriages are now whirled,and where electric-lighted hotels help to dispel romance bythe creation of comfortable fact. Owing to the configuration of Natal, it is unhappily the Rivers,case that but two rivers in the country are navigable at all,and those only for a few miles from the coast. The verycircumstance which bestows on the Colony its variety of climates, its steppes or terraces, cuts off this cheap andeasy means of transport and pleasure.
