A sharp- pointed large caliber needle is attached to an irrigating can by rubber tubing. The needle is usually plunged under the breast near the chest wall, the skin being first thoroughly disinfected and the can held about 3 to 4 feet above the patient while the solution is being run Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Stoney, Emily M.
