Large Car Mortising and very heavy and substantial carmortiser and borer has been broughtout by the J. A. Fay & Egan Com-pany, of 445 W. Front street, Cincin-nati, designed to cut in any kind ofwood, mortises from 54 • t 3 *.wide and up to 6 ins. deep, and adaptedfor the heaviest description of car andbridge work. The column is a singlecasting, which, being hollow, is amplystrong to stand up to the heavieststrain to which a machine of this kindmay be put. The entire machine isself-contained, and its broad floor baseinsures freedom from vibration. Thedriving pulley and crank shaft are sup-ported between the bearings instead ofbeing overhung, as is the case withsome machines, adding materially to itscapacity and power. The outside bear-ing supports the crank shaft in No. 69—C.\R MORTISER .IND BORER. The front and center bearings areplaced on top, being a part of the maincolumn, and receive the shock of theram. This is one of the new features(if this machine, and is claimed to besuperior to all other methods for thispurpose. The new strap device on theupper end of the pitman, connecting itwith the crank shaft, is especially pro-vided for the takeup of the wear and topermit changing the bronze bushingwithout dismantling the upper part ofthe machine, saving much time andlabor over other methods. The chisel mandrel, large in diameter, and made of the best cast steel, is con-nected to a solid ram working in planedways, making it impossible for themandrel to spring when mortising atfull stroke the hardest kind of wood. Ithas a perfectly graduated stroke, com-mencing at a still point above the ex-treme upper throw and working grad-ually down into the mortise, with little
