The Thiepval memorial commemorates the 1916 Anglo-French offensive on the Somme and it carries the names of 73,000 British and South African men who died and have no known grave and who fell on the Somme between July 1916 and March 1918. The Memorial is 150 feet high and was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was officially opened on 31 July 1932 by the Prince of Wales
