Gastropod opercula. An operculum is a retractable calcareous plate found on the opening of a gastropod shell. It is attached dorsally to the gastropod's foot and serves as a protection against predators and drought. In several regions certain types of Âopercula are ground and used as incense material. These opercula are from the South China Sea, north east Borneo.
