Peace to their warlike,superstitious souls! On leaving the castle we visited an inn, in the yardof which stood scores of mules. It was an odoriferous butinteresting place. Under a shed at one side of it satabout a dozen smiths at work, men who hire their standsat a yearly or monthly rent. Fixed into the groundbefore each of them—it must be remembered that thesepeople sit at their work, which is all done on the coldiron without the help of fire—was a tiny anvil. On theseanvils the craftsmen were employed in fashioning thegreat horseshoe nails of the country, or in cutting out. 5< 2u A CYPRIOTE WEDDING 89 and hammering thin, flat, iron plates which are used inthe East for the shoeing of mules and donkeys. Thesediscs that are made with only one small hole in the centre,must in many ways be prejudicial to the comfort andhealth of the beast, or so we should think, since theycause its frog to grow foul and rot away. The teachingsof practical experience, however—for which after somestudy of such things I have great respect — seem toprove this kind of shoe to be best suited for use uponthe stony tracks of the country. These plates are securedto the animals hoof by six of the huge-headed nails thatI have mentioned, and if properly fixed will last forseveral months without renewal.
