Founded in 1891 by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths it was referred to as Goldsmiths' Technical and Recreative Institute (more commonly as Goldsmiths' Institute. A medieval guild for goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewellers, the university still has a connection to its original educational roots. The original Institute was in New Cross and the building known as Richard Hoggart was designed by architect John Shaw Jr,
