Male and female Eastern Bluebirds defending nestbox

The Tourne Country Park meadow contained a number of paired nest boxes – aimed at helping the Eastern Bluebirds to breed. However Tree Swallows use a nest hole exactly the same size and being more aggressive tend to take priority. The idea of the paired boxes is that Tree Swallows don’t like to be too close to other Tree Swallows – leaving a box free for Bluebirds.
