Cape ground squirrel (Xerus inauris) lying down. This rodent lives in open arid areas of southern Africa. It is a social animal living in colonies numbering between 5 and 30 individuals. The colonies dig extensive burrow systems. It feeds on grasses, roots, seeds and insects. Photographed in Etosha National Park, Namibia.
