PAINTINGOne side of the room in which painting is taught is partitioned intobooths, or small rooms, the walls of which are arranged to represent theinside and outside of houses, and on these, students practice the variousparts of their trade. On the walls of the main room is ample space forstenciling and other forms of IN THE PAINT SHOP The course of instruction includes house painting, lettering, signpainting, and interior work, such as paper hanging, frescoing and var-nishing, and staining and varnishing of furniture. The many buildingson the grounds furnish a large variety of practical work. PRINTING Instruction and practice are given in each branch of the trade. Thecourse is divided into six periods. The first period is devoted to plaintypesetting on newspaper and book work ; the second period to makingready and running small jobs on the small power presses ; the thirdperiod to cylinder-press work; the fourth period to the making up ofbook pages, tabular work, stonework, imposition of forms, etc., thefifth period to general job work; and the last period to miscellaneouswork, including proof reading, pamphlet trimming, making of tablets,check and order-book binding, etc. The aim is to give as thorough anall-round training as is possible in the time allowed to the trade. 72 TRADE-SCHOOL COURSE 73
