The alarm was raised by a quick thinking passing member of the public who alerted the owners who had just sat down to eat their dinner. Forty Firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze in East Moen Road in the village of Langrish just outside Petersfield in Hampshire. A neighbour living in the near The Close who asked not to be named said:" “It was about when we saw the smoke and the flames climbing the roof. We thought it was probably a bonfire but decided to take a closer look. “After getting closer I realised the roof was on fire and went to notify the owners.” The fire was already raging in the thatched roof and flames had destroyed the wires – plunging the home into darkness. The near by neighbour said: “At first I could only see smoke. It looked like it was coming out of the chimney. The fire broke out just after 8pm on Sunday the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Fire crews used a specialist mixture of air and foam mixed with water (CAFS) in an attempt to quell the flames that at one point were shooting 20 feet height into the. Fire fighting efforts were hampered due to a shortage of water. Crews arrived in the road just after this evening and are likely to remain over night at the scene damping down and cursing away. At the height of the blaze Group Manger Jason Avery from Hampshire Fire and Rescue service said "That they had nine pumping appliances at the scene being supported by three water carrier due to an issue with a limited supply water support due to the rural location. Mr Avery went on they say in the early part crews did some great salvage work and managed to remove and recovery a large amount of personal effects and belongings.
