He was taken from his ])usi-ness and placed where there was little chance for work or useful occupation ofany kind. Often, after weeks or mouths of confinement, the debtor wasreleased, and the creditor had his labor for his pains. That is, the troubleincuricd in the arrest and imprisonment of his poor neighbor brought him noth-ing but the enmity of the debtor and his family, and perhaps the reproach ofthe community. It was a poor way to collect debts, and was abandoned byalmost universal consent. But the reader of the old Records will find honored names in the list ofdebtors. One was
