While nothing really conclusive con-cerning this variety of deposit has beenworked out, it seems reasonable to sup-pose that the slight deposits of food andother materials which can nearly alwaysbe found underneath the free margins ofthe gums serve as a starting-point for the deposit of calcium salts. If a prophy-lactic file be inserted beneath the freemargins of the gums, it can usually bewithdrawn fairly well filled with a softdeposit, probably composed of broken-down food material, bacteria, tissuecells, etc. This deposit occupies the areawhich, unless the teeth are given prophy-lactic treatment, will probably be occu-pied by the deposit of dark salivary cal-culus. They may occurin small patches or in a thin layer, whichmay extend about a considerable portionof the root. They are never found inmasses, as is generally the case with sali-vary calculus. TREATMENT. Proper treatment consists of the re-moval of irritants, medicinal and me-chanical assistance, and home treatmentby the patient. The removal of t
