The Empire of China was a short-lived unsuccessful attempt by statesman and general Yuan Shikai to reinstate monarchy in China, with himself as the Hongxian Emperor. The monarchy lasted only from 1915-1916. The Republican arms (right) was actually the state emblem of the Chinese Empire and the Chinese Republic from 1913 to was based on the ancient Chinese symbols of the Twelve Ornaments (auspicious signs)
