He was one of the assessors of thetown of Springfield in 1847. He died in Chicopee Falls,July 13, 1878, aged 81 years, 3 months, 21 days. Hon. William Barron Calhoun was born in Boston,Mass., December 29, 1796; graduated at Yale College in1814 ; came to Springfield and studied law in the office ofHon. In 1830 hewas chosen a member of the school committee. He was amember of the House of Representatives from 1825 to1835, for two years speaker of the House, a state sen-ator in 1846-47 and president of the Senate during histerm of office ; a representative in Congress from Decem-ber 7, 1835, to March 3, 1843 5 ^ presidential elector in1844, 01^ the ticket of Henry Clay for president. From1848 to 185 I he was secretary of state for 1853 he was appointed state bank commissioner andheld the office until 1855, when upon the election of Henry , governor, he was relieved of the office. In 1859he was mayor of Springfield; in 1861 a representative tothe Legislature. On his retirement from Congress he purchased in 1843the Goodal
