In 1837 he was ap-pointed a member of the first Board of Regents anddrew the one-year term. He was re-appointed forthe full term of four years, but resigned the officeearly in 1840. From 1844 to 1846, and from 1848to 1851, he was Treasurer of the University. Dur-ing the period of his Regency he was nearly alwayspresent at the meetings of the Board and took anactive part in the proceedings. He died at Tecum-seh, July 8, 1888. SAMUEL DENTON was born at Wallkill,New ^ork, July 2, 1S03. He was graduated atCastleton Medical College, Vermont, in 1825, and. SAiMUKL DKNlON shortly after removed to Ann Arbor, Michigan. Heoccupied several positions of trust in his adoptedState. He was appointed a member of the first settling at Tecmiiseh, Michigan. He immediately of Regents of the University and drew the REGENTS BY APPOINTMENT ^7Z three-year terra. From 1845 to 1S48 inclusive, lierepresented Washtenaw County in the State Senate,and during the last session was President profeiiipore. He was Irofessor of the Theory andPractice of Medicine and of Pathology in the Medi-cal Department of the University from its organiza-tion in 1850 until his death. He died at AnnArbor, August 17, 1S60. GIDEON OLIN WHITTEMORE was boni at St. Albans, Vermont, August 12, iS( studied law, and was admitted to the Bar at anearly age, entering upon the practice of his profes-sion at Pontiac, Michigan. He held for a time theoffice of Judge of Probate for Oakland 1S46 to 1848 he was Secretary of
