They have a bad reputa-tion, being said to be treacherous and they are also reputed to be cannibalsis no matter of wonder, inasmuch as theybelong to the Papuan race. They are saidto rival the Fans of Africa in one respect, and to dig up the bodies of the buried dead,in order to eat them. The island is volcanic, and the subterraneanfires seem to aid the already exuberant veg-etation of the tropics, which in Tanna at-tains a development that is almost incredi-ble. The inhabitants of Tanna are as black asthose of Yate, but seem to have no otherpoints of resemblance. The men appear tothink that they are not black enough bynature, for they have a way of daubing theirsable countenances with black lead, andpainting upon the black groundwork sundrypatterns in red ochre. The hair is frizzed. (973) DISCOVERY OF RELICS. 975 out after the ordinary Papuan type which isdyed a reddish dun color by means of lime. We come now to Errumanga. This second murder was owing tothe priests, who persuaded the people thatan epidemic which had done much damageamong the natives was caused by the mis-sionaries from a strange land. The ignorantpeople readily believed this statement, and, wild with the uncontrolled, fury of the sav-age, they murdered both the accused per-sons. The deed was scarcely done before-the people repented of it,
