Pipa, a well known destination throughout South America has only relatively recently come to the attention of other travellers. Backpackers and surfers discovered Pipa in the early 1980's and some loved it so much they never left. Pipa is blessed with several stunning beaches, two (Praia do Madeiro and Baia dos Golphinos) where wild dolphins come to feed and frolic daily amongst swimmers, Praia dos Minas (Turtle Beach) where turtles come annually to lay their eggs, Praia do Amor (Love Beach) which is a surfers paradise and the town beach (centro) with its beach restaurants and fishing boats. The surrounding area comprises lagoons, forests and deserted beaches and is a magnet for eco tourism. Beach buggies are popular and it is possible to drive for many kilometres on the beaches in the area. Nearby Natal is one of the host cities for the 2014 World Cup and it is hoped that visitors will take the opportunity to visit the area after the matches.
