Hereceived his academic education in the academy of Vandeveer, in Easton, and entered Lafayette Col-lege, Easton, Pennsylvania, in October, 1851, and grad-uated therefrom in July, [855, an honor man in the class. In 1861 he was editor and part owner of the LehighRegister, published in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He recruited part of Company A, Ninth RegimentPennsylvania Cavalry, in .Allentown, and was musteredinto the United States service as lieutenant in October,i86i,at Camp Cameron, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. InApril, 1862, he was made captain Company F,same regi-ment, and in 1S64 was mustered as major of the regiment,not being able to be mustered prior to that time, becausethe battalion to which he was assigned lacked the req
