Toconsider fully the contents of only one of its manydepartments would take the entire space allowed forthe present work. The question then has been,under the title of The Art of the Vatican, whatshall be chosen as representative of that art, andhow much room shall be given to each this choice, of course, the personal equationmust largely enter. Probably all will agree thatnone of the galleries, museums, and chapels includedhere could be omitted. The only doubt would beconcerning the exclusion of other divisions. Thereason for ignoring the Library, the Egyptian andEtruscan Museums, and the Pauline Chapel, mayseem to many difficult of comprehension.
