The short and thick curved hyphffi (7m to 13^ long and3m to 4m wide) surround large clumps of spores. The spores are coarse, doubly contoured (4m to 7m) and round. On staining with Ziehls solutionthe spores are seen to contain deeply stained globules lying, in allprobability, on the inner surface of the cell membrane. The rest of theprotoplasm is but little stained, or not at all. One frequently finds thatthese globules are also found free; what their nature is does not appear;they are not found in cultures, the freshly developed spores showingonly a single globular mass of protoplasm possessing a fine blue Fig. 96.—Inflammation of cornea by thrush (Oidium albicans), o, conidia; e, pus cells.(From Piaut, in Kolle and Wassermann.) Cultures are obtained with difficulty and the growths cannot betransferred for many culture generations. The growth is said to be mostcharacteristic on potato which shows yellowish-white colonies withinfour or five days. Thrush (Oospora, Oidium Albicans, MoniUa Albicans) (Fig. 96).^Thrush, as is well known, occurs most frequently in the oral mucousmembrane of infants during the early weeks of Hfe. It is also found asa slight mycosis in the vagina, especially of pregnant women. In rarecases the disease attacks adults, and especially those whose system hasbeen undermined by other diseases, such as diabetes, typhoid, etc. A fewcases are recorded in literature in which this fungus has given rise to 240 THE PATHOGENIC MOLDS constitutional disease. In these cases autopsy ha
