Similar to^ typical Salmo clarkii, but with dark,spots only on the dorsal, caudal and adipose fins, and on thecaudal peduncle behind front of anal, where the spots are veryprofuse, smaller than the pupil; anterior regions dusky-bluish, notsilvery; red blotch on throat very conspicuous; head shorter anddeeper than in the typical cut-throat trout, the snout shorter andblunter, not longer than the eye; opercle and preopercle less convex;caudal moderately forked. 187 Green-back Trout. Green-back Trout Salmo stomias (Cope) This trout is known onlv from the headwaters of the Platte andArkansas rivers and is abundant chiefly in the smaller streams andbrooks and in the shallow waters of lakes. It is the commonspecies in Twin Lakes, Colorado and in the waters about Leadville. It is a small, black-spotted trout, not often exceeding a pound inweight, closely resembling the typical cut-throat trout, but differingchiefly in the much greater size of its black spots which are mainlygathered on the posterior half of the body. Mouth small; scalessmall, about i8o; back deep green, sides sometimes red; flesh deepsalmon coloured.
