Portrait view of the martello tower at Bawsey in East Anglia after sea defences have been instated

After years of worry that Bawdsey martello tower would collapse into the sea, in September 2008 it was finally announced that a privately-funded sea defence project could be carried out . Thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, the East Lane Trust has raised the money by members who've sold plots of land in nearby Alderton, Hollesley and Bawdsey. 2,000 tonnes of granite boulders were brought in by barge from Norway. Each one weighed around 6 tonnes and have been built to form a Y-shaped groyne.
