This 1880s illustration shows Christ in Byzantine times - the depiction is a mosaic from the chapel of Martorana at Palermo in Sicily. The church known as La Martorana is in Palermo’s Piazza Bellini. It was founded in 1143 by an admiral of King Roger II’s, George of Antioch, whose rank gave it its original name of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio. There are strong Greek and Byzantine influences in the mosaics of Christ (seen here), Madonna, and the saints.
