Cancer of the duodenum. Endoscope view showing cancer of the duodenum, the uppermost and shortest part of the small intestine, which is the main site of absorption for minerals. The tumour is an adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer arising from glandular epithelial tissue. It has arisen in a patient with coeliac disease (or gluten enteropathy), which is an uncommon genetic condition where the lining of the intestine reacts to gluten, a protein found in cereals. This causes malabsorption, and mineral and vitamin deficiency.
