Youngest galaxy I Zwicky 18. Hubble Space Telescope image of the galaxy I Zwicky 18 (lower left), the youngest galaxy known at the time the image was taken. The galaxy might be as young at 500 million years old, which means that it didn't begin star formation until over 13 billion years after the Big Bang. The bright white regions in the centre of the galaxy are starbirth regions. This burst of star formation is thought to have been triggered by gravitational interactions with the nearby galaxy at upper right. I Zwicky 18 is around 45 million light years from Earth. This image was taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the HST in 2003.
