Michael Maier (1568-1622), German physician and alchemist. Maier was born at Rendsberg, Holstein, and was educated at Rostock, Frankfurt and Padua. In 1608 he went to Prague where he was appointed physician to Rudolf II. Between 1611 and 1616 he was at the court of James I of England, after which he returned to Germany. During his career he blended a study of physiology with a study of alchemy and was considered one of the greatest alchemists of his age. A fervent Lutheran, Maier was strongly involved in the mystic Rosicrucian movement. This engraving comes from 'Symbola aureae' by Michael Maier, published at Frankfurt in 1617.
