Fossil research. Researcher using a microtomograph to examine a fossil. The microtomograph is a CT (computed tomography) scanner, adapted to scan objects in microscopic detail using X-rays. Fossil objects, often dating back millions of years, are formed as rocks slowly form around objects buried in mud. The fossil seen here is of the skull of an ancestor of the otter (see E445/161), obtained from the Natural History Museum of Lyon, France.
