Histone deacetylase and inhibitor. Molecular model of a histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDI) molecule (bottom left) bound to a histone deacetylase 2(HD

Histone deacetylase and inhibitor. Molecular model of a histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDI) molecule (bottom left) bound to a histone deacetylase 2(HDAC2) molecule (white shape). HDAC2 is an enzyme that modifies complexes of protein and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) known as histones in a way that allows gene expression. Therefore histone deacetylase inhibitors act to inhibit gene expression. HDIs act as mood stabilisers and anticonvulsants and are being studied for use in neurodegenerative diseases and as anti-cancer drugs.
