CHORIONEPITHELIOMA 557. ft IS 0) OS — H 13 IB -^ 558 GYNAECOLOGY characteristic to establish the microscopical diagnosis of chorion-epithelioma. Chorionepithelioma may occur at any age within the limits ofpossible pregnancy, a case having been recorded at seventeen and oneat fifty-five. A high degree of fertility appears to entail a certainpredisposition to the disease, for a relatively large proportion of caseshas occurred in women who have had five or more pregnancies. Intwo out of every three cases, the immediately preceding pregnancyterminated in abortion. As in the case of all other varieties of malignant disease of theuterus, the earliest symptom is hcemorrhage. Usually it is severefrom the first, and in this respect differs greatly from that met with incarcinoma. Not infrequently the patient also notices the passage of shreds or pieces in the discharge. In exceptional cases theamount of bleeding is not at any time considerable. More oftenprofound anaemia results from profuse and repeated haemorrhage
