Soulaines-Dhuys (north-eastern France): working with clay in the Royer Pottery and Tile Factory following ancestral techniques for 6 generations, making handcrafted pieces while respecting the heritage of a traditional manufacturing method. In the quarry, wind, rain and frost decompose the soil, which is then mixed and moistened before being extracted, thus maintaining the soil's natural cycle. The clay is then loaded into the moulding machine before being shaped into different forms. After several weeks of drying, the products are removed from the racks and taken to the oven. The dry products are placed in the oven in a very precise way, so that the heat of the wood fire spreads between the products everywhere in the oven. Firing lasts 9 days, during which time the large furnace must be supplied with wood day and night. The temperature must rise to 1000°c. *** Local Caption ***
