It will sometimes be found that the mesentery is undulyshort, so that there is excessive strain. It is then wise to ligateand divide the central portion of the mesentery ; otherwisethere may be pressirre-necrosis of the posterior wall of the gutagainst the rod; or else, when the rod is removed later, thespur will tend to drop back. The mesentery may also bedivided, if desired, so that the skin can be sewn under themiddle of the loop of bowel to form a bridge and increase theeffectiveness of the spur, but this is usually unnecessary, andovermuch suturing is undesirable.
