Ischaemic bowel. Light micrograph of a section through a portion of intestine that has been damaged by an interruption of the blood supply, or ischaemia. The surface epithelium and glands of the mucosa lining show severe tissue injury with cell death and disruption of normal gland organisation. The tissue is engorged with blood with accumulation of leucocytes (white blood cells), typical of an inflammatory type reaction to tissue necrosis (cell death). Magnification: x20 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
