It feems to have beendefigned, in general, to give the Roman emperors, and theircivil and military officers, a diftinCt idea of the fituation, ex-tent, and principal places of the feveral provinces of that prodi-gious empire; and, in particular, to be a directory to the Ro-man troops in their marches. For it contains the names of thetowns and ftations on the feveral military-ways, with the num-ber of miles between each of thefe towns, and that which floodnext to it, on the fame road
