VI, of Madoc. The belt here seems to have a considerable width and to extend for atleast a mile in an east and west direction. The slate is of a good blue greycolour and, judging from the fragments now hdngin the old quarry, it is verydurable. It would appear that excessive hardness and lack of capital to pushthe excavation to greater depths were responsible for the cessation of oper-ations. See the report of the Royal Commission on the Mineral Resourcesof Ontario, 1890. pp. S7-SS. Slates are also Icnown to occur on Calabogie lake\ in the townships ofHorton and Ross, and in the township of Lavant^. Geol. Sur. Can. Rep. 1876-77, p. Ibid. pp. 260, 262. Ibid. p. 253. Plate LXIX.
