Theyenable us to determine some of the chief laws of ice land ice is attached on the west to the Greenland coast. Itsexterior limits exceed but little the shallow depths of the conti-n e n t a 1 eastern limitof the polar ice cor-responds ratherclosely with theisobar of 1,500 me-ters which marksthe base of the con-tinental talus slope;that is to say, thefield which itcovers is enor-mously expandedtoward the northand gradually nar-rows to the southuntil, at the heightof the second cross-ing of the Belgica,the zone hasscarcely, accordingto observations ofCommander deGerlache, an extentof more than 2 or3 kilometers.
