Locomotive boiler construction; a practical treatise for boilermakers, boiler users and inspectors .. . limit of the sheet and then shift the line D-D sothat the best position will be obtained. Having settledon these distances at the end, measure up the sheet inthe middle to see if the reference circle has been properlylocated and to make sure that when the work is laid downit will not run off the plate. Now with a straight edge, draw the reference line D-D. Bisect this line and drawthe center line C-C at right angles to it. Along thecenter line D-D lay off the dimensions which havealready been decided upon, in Fig. 17. The first distance will be rather large, for the reasonthat the curve around the bottom center is very flat andthe dimensions will hardly be measurable for a distanceof about 2 feet. From this point, with spaces 4 or 6inches, draw lines corresponding to the location alreadydecided upon, at right angles to the reference line; onthese lines lay off the proper dimensions. A similar con-struction is made on the left hand side of the sheet, and 55 Laying out the gusset Laying out the gusset sheet. through the series of points thus laid out draw a curvedline with the aid of a straight edge bent so as to strike themean position of the points. The lines which have thusbeen laid out are A-A and B-B. Beginning with theline A-A and with the dividers set to 6l/2 inches, strikea number of little arcs, which when connected will givethe top edge of the sheet. In the same way, with the dividers set to 6% inches, draw the lower edge of the sheet. At the top of thesheet draw two lines, the first 1^4 inches from the edge, and the second 2 inches from the first. The sheet mustnow be quartered for the top seam. The points A andA will be located from the dimensions already this is the neutral line, the neutral circumference atthis position A-A will be exactly the same as it wouldbe at the edge of the sheet. Therefore when this gussetis rolled and the oute
