Suleiman Pasha, 1847. Born Joseph Anthelme Seve, Suleiman Pasha (1788-1860) was a former officer of the army of Napoleon Bonaparte who converted to Islam and was recruited by the Egyptian army in the 1820s to reform it on European lines. He returned to France in 1845 and was made a Grand Officer of the Legion d'honneur by King Louis-Philppe. A print from 19th Century Egypt, 1847.
