When the work to be done is of toolarge a sweep to admit of its being cutout of a solid plank, the method pre-ferred by modern mechanics, for the pur-pose of obtaining a piece of segmentalor semi-circular material so that it willremain permanently in that shape, is tobend it over a drum or mold to the sweepor curve desired. This drum is put together in the samemanner as the center for an arch, and ismade up of two frames joined togetherby battens, the length of which is greaterthan the width of the stuff to be drum is raised up from the floor by. Fig. General View of Drum. means of legs in order to permit theoverlengths which are necessary to makethe joints to pass down on either side ofthe drum, as shown in Fig. 1 of the illus-trations. It will be noticed that the joints of thebattens are made close and the wholeconvex surface carefully smoothed overto reduce all possible lump or projectionsand insure a smooth, even curvature tothe board to be bent. When the board or plank has beenkerfed or dadoed (see Fig. 9), and thusmade ready for bending, it is placed onthe drum and bent around it so that itssoffit presses against the convex drumsurface at every point and is there re-tained by hand screws firmly placed fromthe bottom edges of the frames to curvedblocks placed on the upper surface of thepiece being bent. If it be necessary, when the sweep • is quick or sharp, notches can be cut out of the bottomedges of the frames so as to bring thepressure of the hand screws to bear di-rectly on the spot desired, as shown inthe elevation
