George M. Whitesides (born 1939), American chemist. Whitesides is Professor of Chemistry at Harvard University, USA. He heads the Whitesides Research Group, which researches subjects including nanotechnology, proteomics, cell biology, optics and microfluidics. Whitesides has authored over 950 scientific papers and is listed as the inventor of over 50 patents. He has received numerous awards for his pioneering chemical research. Photographed in 2009.
