Accordingly, a levee was built that year,but not sufficient to withstand extraordinaryfloods; for the very next freshet, that of 1852,broke over it in several places and inundatedthe city. Under the supervision of the city council, alevee was then built on I street to Sixth, andthence to the Eidge. This again was foundinadequate, as the subsequent winter, 1852-*53, proved. The next year, at an expense of $50,-000, borrowed on scrip, the levee was widenedand made higher, so that it extended up twenty-two and a half feet above low-water mark. With occasional repairs of breaches andstrengthening weak places, this levee has sincestood, while that portion bounding the east andsouth sides of the city has been superseded bythe river levee generally, built by the respectivereclamation districts. The Y street levee, acomparatively new one, is a public drive-way formost of its HIHTOBT OF SACRAMENTO COUNTY.
