It dates from the second halfof the 13th century, and cannot represent John dePort, son of the founder, as commonly said. It isnow set on a tomb-shaped block of masonry, onwhich is a marble grave slab, and there are similarblocks and gravestones in the other three recesses, allof 13th or early 14th-century date. To the north andsouth of the altar table are set four similar slabs; thefirst is very like that in the south recess ; the cross on. Monk Sherborne Priory Church (used as Pamber ParishChurch) : The Tower the second is almost obliterated, but the other twohave leaves of late 12th or early 13th-century stylebranching from the stems of the crosses, and one hasan inscription running round its moulded edge inearly Gothic characters, some of the letters containedwithin others, as often in 12th-century reads:— # SI QUIS eris qvi transieris sta pereege PLORA 4 SVM QVOD ERIS FVERAM QUE QUOD ES PROME PRECOR HORA. At the foot of the cross shaft is an Agnus Dei. Near the font are a few old tiles, probably 15th-century work ; the patterns on them are almostobliterated.
