Thedeath of the Countess took place at Bathon the 1st of June in the same year, andthe Earl followed her to the grave sixteendays later, at the early age of thirty-two. Lovely and pleasant in their lives, in their deaththey were not divided. The youthful couple were interred inone grave, in the Abbey Church of Holy-rood. There is a full-length portrait ofthe Earl, in Highland costume, at Dun-robin, from the brush of Allan Ramsay. By his Countess, Mary Maxwell, the seventeenth Earl had twodaughters:— 1. Lady Jane, born 24th May 176—, died 3rd January 1766. 2. Lady Elizabeth, known as the Duchess-Countess of 12. Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland, the only surviving child of the seventeenth Earl, was born at Leven Lodge,Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, on the 24th of May 1765, and was consequently 534 SUTHERLAND PEERAGE CASE little more than a year old when she succeeded to the Sutherland titles andestates. She was placed under the tutors and curators appointed by herfather about a year and a half before his death. They consisted of theDuke of Athole, the Earl of Elgin, Thomas Miller Lord Justice-Clerk, SirAdam Fergusson of Kilkerran, James Wemyss of Wemyss, Sir DavidDalrymple of Hailes, Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck, and JohnMackenzie of Delvine. The infant Countess was committed to the careof Lady Alva, her maternal grandmother, who resided at Drumsheugh,then a suburb of Edinburgh. In the course of the year 1767, petitions were presente
