Green tree ant jumping spider (Cosmophasis bitaeniata) on a fence post, Townsville, QLD, Australia October 2017


My daughter spotted this spider while we were riding back from school. It is a very active species that feeds on the larvae of green tree ants, taking them from the mandibles of mature ants. Apparently they use pheremones to trick the ants. This particular spider was on a fence railing sizing up ants as they walked past. I assume it had fallen from the tree lying overhead
