Swollen scrotum and scrotal veins. 20 year old man with a swollen scrotum, a condition known as a hydrocele testis, and enlarged scrotal veins, a condition known as a varicocele. The hydrocele is caused by the accumulation of fluid in the scrotal sac and can be triggered by inflammation, infection or injury to the testis. The varicocele is caused by the malfunctioning of valves that usually prevent the backflow of blood, leading to stretched bulging veins. Treatment is with draining of the scrotum and the wearing of support underwear. In severe cases the affected veins may need to be ligated (tied off).
