The area was blessed by a Hawaiian minister to protect the Wave Energy Conversions devices and the staff that work on them. The WEC devices harness the energy from the oceans waves, an abundant and renewable energy. The WEC devices near the base are currently in the prototype stage, but with more research and development more efficient models can be created to help provide electricity to impoverished coastal cities and military installations.
