A manual of diseases of the nervous system . )(Troisier, Arch, de Physiologie, 1873, vol. v, p. 716, Case 2.) VOL. I. 22 838 SPINAL CORD. condition almost tlie whole thicli:ness of tlie cord inaj be involved ( and B, Fig. 105). Now and then, when tliere is no primary nitniu-gitis, the superficial layers of the cord are chiefly damaged, a form thathas been termed chronic annular myelitis or annular sclerosis, becausethe affection extends like a ring around the cord. This form of lesionis, however, as we have seen, sometimes merely an ascending degene-ration of fibres that lie near the surface, and degenerate above theprimary lesion. In chronic myelitis, according to the limited use of the termalready explained, the microscope shows that the inflammation isprimarily interstitial. The affected areas always stain deeply withcarmine in consequence of the great increase in their connective-tissueelements, and may beoccupied by a dense fibrous reticulum, in whichfew nerve-elements can be discovered, as in Fig. 104. In less affected. / -s- .-v-^. ^
