To the west, on theother hand, it opens like a fan. The precipitous walls ofcliff soften into downs of limestone, which die in the rollingplain beyond Arpajon, where, thirteen miles away, onelovely hill, broken from the chain, and larger and morelovely than its fellows, rises soft and blue, shaped like thebreast of Ceres. To the one hand, the scene is full ofgrandeur and melancholy; while the western landscapesmiles, most tranquil and noble in its dreamy peace.
