Laser eye surgery. Close-up of a patient having LASEK eye surgery. LASEK (laser-assisted epithilial keratomileusis) is a type of refractive laser eye surgery used to correct blurred vision caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens. It is used to correct myopia (short-sightedness) and hyperopia (long-sightedness). The process involves folding back of the epithelial layer of the cornea before the use of a laser to correct the curvature. This is different to the LASIK operation, where an incision is made into the cornea to create a corneal flap. This image shows fluid being applied to the cornea.
