Artificial computer cells. Screen display of replicating artificial computer cells called Langton's loops. Created by computer scientist Christopher Langton, these are forms of artificial life (alife). Incorporated in each square loop are instructions (coloured blocks) which are used during replication to construct an identical cell. A full copy of the code is then passed to the new cell, before the cells separate. Like real organisms, mutations in the code could create cells with improved fitness that were more likely to spread their code.
